One tank, and a whale shark
Kaiyukan's central tank represents the Pacific Ocean itself, and you circle it gradually from top to bottom as you move through the building, passing habitat zones for different regions of the Ring of Fire along the way. Whale sharks are the tank's headline residents, sharing the water with rays and shoals of smaller fish.
The route through the building
The visit works as a single descending spiral rather than a maze of side-rooms, moving from surface habitats like otters and penguins near the top down toward deeper-water species. It's an easy, well-paced two-to-three-hour visit for most people, including families.
Tempozan Harbor Village
Kaiyukan sits inside Tempozan Harbor Village, alongside the large Tempozan Ferris Wheel and a harbourside shopping and dining strip, making it easy to turn into a half-day out on Osaka Bay rather than a single stop.
