Tenjin Matsuri
Held in late July and centred on Osaka Tenmangu Shrine, Tenjin Matsuri is counted among Japan's three great festivals, built around a procession of boats along the Okawa River, ornate floats, and a large fireworks display over the water. It dates back over a thousand years and remains one of the clearest windows into how seriously Osaka takes its traditional festival culture even as a thoroughly modern city.
Bunraku puppet theatre
Bunraku, a traditional form of puppet theatre using large, intricately operated puppets alongside chanted narration and shamisen music, has a home base in Osaka at the National Bunraku Theatre. It's a slower, more formal cultural experience than a street festival, but it's one of the most distinctly Japanese performing arts still regularly staged.
Sumiyoshi Taisha
Sumiyoshi Taisha, one of Japan's oldest Shinto shrines, is known for a distinctive architectural style predating Buddhist influence on shrine design, and for its steeply arched Sorihashi bridge — a popular photo spot and a genuine piece of the city's pre-castle history.
