From electronics street to otaku culture hub
Den Den Town — the name is a playful abbreviation of denki, the Japanese word for electronics — started as a strip of electronics wholesalers and retailers stretching south from Nipponbashi station. Over the past few decades it's grown a second identity alongside that original one, filling in with anime, manga, retro video game and trading card shops as otaku culture spread through the same streets.
What to expect
It's a quieter, less overwhelming version of Tokyo's Akihabara — narrower streets, less crowded, but with a similar mix of multi-floor specialist shops, secondhand game stores with genuinely deep back catalogues, and the occasional maid cafe. It rewards browsing rather than a single must-see stop.
Getting there
Nipponbashi station sits on the Sakaisuji subway line and connects easily from Namba, one stop and a short walk away — making it easy to combine with a Namba or Dotonbori day.
