Onigiri (rice balls wrapped around a savoury filling) are the konbini staple worth trying first, alongside sandwiches — the simple egg salad sando has a small but genuine cult following — and each chain's own fried chicken, sold hot from a counter near the register. Seasonal and limited-edition items rotate constantly, which is part of why regular konbini browsing becomes a habit for a lot of visitors.
The big three chains
7-Eleven, Lawson and FamilyMart are the three chains you'll see constantly across Osaka, each with slightly different signature items and loyal followings — Lawson's fried chicken and FamilyMart's fried food counter both have dedicated fans, and differences between chains are a genuinely common small-talk topic among residents.
More than just food
Beyond snacks, konbini function as informal utility hubs — ATMs that reliably accept foreign cards, bill payment, event and transport ticket purchases, and printing, all at the same counter. It's rarely more than a few minutes' walk to one anywhere in central Osaka.
