A grid laid down under Hideyoshi
Semba's street grid dates back to city planning carried out under Toyotomi Hideyoshi alongside the original Osaka Castle, deliberately laid out to organise merchant trade in the shadow of the new fortress. That same grid still structures the district today, now filled in with modern office towers rather than Edo-period trading houses.
Doshomachi's pharmaceutical legacy
Within Semba, the Doshomachi area has been Japan's centre for the wholesale drug and pharmaceutical trade since the Edo period, and several of Japan's major pharmaceutical companies still trace their headquarters or origins to this single street — a rare case of a historic trade cluster persisting into a modern, entirely different-looking industry.
Honmachi today
Honmachi, immediately north, has grown into a dense modern business district of office towers, largely quiet outside working hours compared to nearby Namba or Dotonbori. It's not a sightseeing destination in its own right, but it's worth understanding as the less visible, still-functioning counterpart to Osaka's tourist-facing merchant history.
