Planning an October or early-November trip to Universal Studios Japan? Halloween Horror Nights brings intense scares, large crowds and attractions with unusually specific rules. The most important part of planning is knowing which experiences are included with entry, which require extra tickets, and which have age restrictions that staff will enforce.

When Halloween Horror Nights is on

The official 2026 Halloween Horror Nights programme runs 11 September–8 November 2026. The wider Universal Extreme Autumn: Discover U!!! event began on 10 September and finishes on 8 November. The park is also celebrating 25 years of Universal Studios Japan, while its Halloween Horror Nights series marks 15 years.

On 9 October, the event is already under way. This guide is for visitors still deciding whether to go over the remaining October weekends or in early November. Park opening hours, attraction schedules, show availability, Express Pass inventory and queue arrangements may differ by date. Use USJ's daily official app and schedule rather than treating a general-season page as a promise about your particular visit.

Street Zombies: the 6pm rule and one exception

The headline outdoor scare experience is Street Zombies, with infected characters spreading around designated park streets and the separate Zombie de Dance celebration. The official Street Zombies page lists performances from 6pm until the park closes, with an explicit exception on 13 October: from 6.30pm. Those are programme start windows, not a guarantee that every zombie appears at every point at once.

The official park event map identifies zombie areas, safe areas and a safe route. Decide before dusk whether your party wants the full scare experience. Anyone sensitive to loud sounds, sudden encounters or heavy crowds should study the safe route before heading from one land to another; do not rely on improvising a shortcut once the evening rush begins.

Lights Out: Nightmare Isolation is adults-only and separately ticketed

Lights Out: Nightmare Isolation is the new R-18 experience at Stage 18. It is not simply another attraction covered automatically by the basic Studio Pass. USJ explicitly requires an exclusive paid show ticket, and guests 17 or younger are not admitted. Participants must sign a waiver on the day and leave bags in the lockers at the entrance. The experience is conducted in Japanese only.

USJ also prohibits participants from revealing or describing the attraction's content or interior, including on social media. That is an official rule rather than a suggestion about avoiding spoilers. Confirm both ticket availability and the waiver procedure before making this experience the centrepiece of your day. Read the official conditions.

Resident Evil Requiem has a different age gate

Resident Evil Requiem: The Dive is another Stage 18 horror attraction, but the conditions are not the same as Lights Out. USJ lists it as an R-15 attraction, with no admission for visitors aged 14 or younger. A Timed Entry eTicket is required; qualifying Universal Express Pass arrangements may also apply. Its individual event listing runs 11 September–27 December 2026, which is longer than the general Halloween Horror Nights dates, and the published daily window begins at 10am subject to park operations.

Do not mix up the three things travellers often mean by “ticket”: admission to the park, a queue or timed-entry arrangement for a particular attraction, and a separate paid show ticket where one is stated. Buying one does not imply that all restrictions or other admission conditions disappear. Check Resident Evil's official page.

What else is in the 2026 programme?

USJ's 2026 map also names Factory of Fear: Zombie Tour, KATE PRESENTS Witches of House 18, Halloween Horror Nights Academy: 15 Years of Screams, Chainsaw Man: The Chaos 4-D, and Sadako’s Curse: Dark Horror Ride. Several familiar rides get darker seasonal versions, while the park's Hollywood Dream attractions feature music collaborations. Names on the map help you plan a route, but admission mechanisms and operating windows should be checked on each attraction's page.

The autumn programme includes non-horror experiences too, such as Hogwarts Castle Walk and daytime family-focused Halloween activities. Couples or mixed-age groups can split their day: do the traditional rides before the evening zombie streets begin, then choose either a scare-heavy night or a safer route away from intense content. Do not assume that every horror attraction runs until 8 November; some individual schedules differ.

Children, costumes and safe routes

USJ says Halloween Horror Nights is not recommended for children aged five or younger; children aged 12 or younger require parental discretion/consent for the general horror programme. These are separate from the strict R-18 and R-15 entry prohibitions above. Adults should not treat the park's overall family-friendly reputation as evidence that horror streets are appropriate for every child.

During the autumn event, frightening zombie or ghost costumes and concealing make-up are restricted around Universal Wonderland and Minion Park, to avoid scaring young visitors. Park rules also prohibit running, touching or deliberately startling performers and other guests. USJ recommends stable shoes rather than sandals or open footwear during crowded night experiences. Read the official costume and safety notice before bringing props, face coverings or elaborate outfits.

Studio Passes, Express Passes and advance planning

USJ has changed its regular admission purchase process: for visits on or after 1 September 2026, you must specify the intended park visit date when buying a Studio Pass. An official option exists to request a date change where eligible. Prices depend on the date and ticket type, so avoid assuming a fixed entrance fee from an old travel article.

Confirm first that your Studio Pass covers the date you want. Next, check any paid experience, Universal Express Pass or timed-entry requirements separately. For example, an exclusive paid ticket is required for Lights Out, while Resident Evil uses timed-entry arrangements. Also check any Super Nintendo World timed-entry rules if you want that land on the same day. USJ states resale is prohibited and resold ticket QR codes may be invalidated; use the official ticket site or authorised channels.

Getting there and leaving after dark

USJ is in Osaka's Konohana Ward, rather than in the Dotonbori/Namba sightseeing area. The usual rail approach is JR Universal City Station on the JR Yumesaki (Sakurajima) Line. Routes from Osaka/Umeda and Namba can involve changing at Nishikujō; check current connections in your route planner instead of relying on an old “10 minutes” claim.

Arrive with time to pass security and find your first priority. Evening crowds can build around the station and Universal CityWalk. If you plan to watch late Zombie de Dance performances, check the actual final train connection to your hotel before the show. The park's closing time varies by date, and a 6pm start for Street Zombies does not mean trains or the park run late on every night.

A practical one-day itinerary

Before arrival: book a date-specific Studio Pass and, if relevant, separately verify tickets for Lights Out and time slots for Resident Evil. Save screenshots or booking references offline where allowed; download USJ's official app and bookmark its 2026 event map.

Morning and afternoon: tackle your highest-priority general rides while energy is fresh. Families can spend this portion together in the less intense lands. Check whether a timed entry for other themed areas is needed that day, because Halloween admission does not override unrelated land-entry rules.

Late afternoon: eat, identify toilets and bag storage, check the official safe-zone map, and agree on a meeting point. Avoid carrying oversized items into scare zones. From 6pm on most days: enter the zombie streets only if your group wants the experience; note the 13 October 6.30pm exception. Finish with a planned route to the station, especially when travelling with children or anyone who may find the night shows overwhelming.
